I think the thing that frightens me most is that her books are consistently best selling.
Ann Coulter suggests Bill Clinton shows signs of being a latent homosexual
because of his multiple affairs with women
"I think that sort of rampant promiscuity does show some level of latent homosexuality."
I mean, there's *so* many things wrong with that statement that I don't know where to begin.
But the money quote comes with this: "Well, there is something narcissistic about homosexuality. Right? Because you’re in love with someone who looks like you. I’m not breaking new territory here, why are you looking at me like that?"
Because you're a crackpot, Ann. He's looking at you like that because you're absolutely nuts.
Oy.

Date: 2006-07-27 08:09 pm (UTC)Even more terrifying? I mentioned this thing to a co-worker and got a bland "uh.. I don't get what's wrong with that" stare in return.
::whimper::

Date: 2006-07-27 08:30 pm (UTC)I disagree that she's anything like any of those you mentioned; they all have their own media platforms, she goes on other people's shows to comment and be interviewed. Colbert and Stewart are on the Comedy Channel, not CNN/Fox/etc. Maher's on HBO; it's clearly not hard news. Limbaugh's closest, but he's more of a commentator than an entertainer.
The whole "an entertainer first" is brought out when someone doesn't want to make a stand on the trash that comes out of this incredibly hateful woman's mouth. There's a choice here: do you agree with her, or not? If you don't, then say so. If you do, then say that. But don't say "well, it doesn't matter, because it's just entertainment". It's not. And she sure doesn't present herself as one.

Date: 2006-07-27 09:08 pm (UTC)Oh, I don't know.. I don't think it's entirely outside the realm of possibility:
1985 dinner - Rich Little and President Ronald Reagan dual press conference skit
1993 dinner - Elayne Boosler
1995 dinner - Conan O'Brien
1998 dinner - Ray Romano
2001 dinner - Darrell Hammond and "Survivor" spoof
2002 dinner - Drew Carey (singer Ozzy Osbourne also attended)
2004 dinner - Jay Leno
2005 dinner - Cedric the Entertainer, plus some jokes by First Lady Laura Bush.
Stewart was invited on Crossfire as an entertainer?
Emphasis all mine:
TUCKER CARLSON: Well, he's been called the most trusted name in fake news. Next, we're joined by Jon Stewart for his one-of-a-kind take on politics, the press and America.
CARLSON: Jon, Jon, Jon, I'm sorry. I think you're a good comedian. I think your lectures are boring.
CARLSON: Wait. I thought you were going to be funny. Come on. Be funny.
CARLSON: Is this really Jon Stewart? What is this, anyway?
STEWART: Yes, it's someone who watches your show and cannot take it anymore.
(LAUGHTER)
STEWART: I just can't.
CARLSON: What's it like to have dinner with you? It must be excruciating. Do you like lecture people like this or
do you come over to their house and sit and lecture them; they're not doing the right thing, that they're missing their opportunities, evading their responsibilities?
STEWART: If I think they are.
(LAUGHTER)
CARLSON: I wouldn't want to eat with you, man. That's horrible.
STEWART: I know. And you won't. But the thing I want to get to...
BEGALA: We did promise naked pictures of the Supreme Court justices.
CARLSON: Yes, we did. Let's get to those.
(CROSSTALK)
BEGALA: They're in this book, which is a very funny book.
STEWART: Why can't we just talk -- please, I beg of you guys, please.
Umm.. yeah, I do think he was invited on as an entertainer, one who'd written a book of satire. Because if he'd been invited on as a commentator, they're heads wouldn't have exploded when he tried to be serious.

Date: 2006-07-27 08:28 pm (UTC)Just like a bad kid who finds that using curse words garners him attention, she has figured out that the more outrageous things she says, the more attention she gets.
She's a loon, sure, but she's a RICH loon.
The best thing to do with people like that is to simply ignore them. Eventually they go away.

Date: 2006-07-27 08:48 pm (UTC)As such, she does a service of sorts to the media who court her. So, if they need to swallow their morals to get high ratings and treat her like she's deserving of respect, then that's what they do. Logic: If Ann wants to be called a commentator and booked as a commentator and treated as if she was even close to sane, and it benefits MY ratings, then that's what I should do.
Again, it may be abhorrent, but it's reality. And since most media types are entertainers themselves, but like to be thought of as serious reporters, who are they to question her?

Date: 2006-07-27 09:13 pm (UTC)It's the fact that almost all of the time, when someone claims that she's an entertainer, it's to diminish the venom in what she's saying, to make it somehow ok.
She, and others like her, even if they're all entertainers, are severely diminishing the discourse in this country, to the point that it's difficult to have a conversation across the political divide anymore. However, when you point that out, the response is "lighten up, she's just an entertainer".

Date: 2006-07-27 09:16 pm (UTC)I refuse to consider her a commentator because she's not, she's a nut.
