June 9 - 12:52pm
Jun. 9th, 2003 09:40 pmI'm currently nearing the end of my lunch break. I had my sandwich and grapes, then went across the street to Staples, where I bought the notebook I'm currently writing in.
Beloved, I want you to know that I studiously avoided the Fabricland that's right across the street, and that the office overlooks. (And that has a really, really big sign.) I don't know how long I can hold out, though.
This morning was entirely taken up by orientation and training. They're easign us in slowly, which is really nice. Everything that definitely fell into the "can you vague that up for me" category during the hiring process is now becoming very clear.
I think I'm going to like it here. The other team members are super friendly. I'm the only girl writer, though. Time off for appointments and the like seem like it won't be a problem.
And I'm told that when they say time is flexible, they actually mean it. There's no "flextime = 'you'll work 60 hours/week when we need it and 40/hours week when it's slower'". There's a maximum of 40 hours a week/8 hours a day. You can go over, say Monday is a 10 hour day, and then work 6 on Tuesday. And you can carry it forward indefinitely. The only stipulation is that you can only carry it forward to a day you actually spend some time in at the office. So if you have 4 hours you haven't billed yet, you can bill it on the day you worked 3 hours, but you can't bill it on the day you called in sick. They will authorize paid overtime, in a clearly documented case, but it's something you need to pre-clear. I got the feeling they understand the work/life balance.
Off to more training.
4:59pm
This job and I are going to get along just fine.
/me is happy.

Written on the train home
Jun. 9th, 2003 09:47 pmGood things today
- Co-workers are all cool, and I like the supervisor. Everyone's very friendly and helpful.
- Lovely view from the office, plus as a bonus, really nice cubicles
- Once I'm on the GO in the morning, it's all indoors. It can rain all it wants.
- The work seems quite cool, if not as inspired from a TechComm POV - then again, I don't really want to be a tech writer wen I grow up
- The hours thing
- I made all of my trains on time
- Sandwich from the steak Dad bbq'd me on Thursday was excellent
- I managed to get through the day without falling asleep. At least till I was on the train home
- When I get home, there will be messages from Ross
