The Miami Herald did some reporting on the case of the 13 year old girl whose abortion the DCF is trying to prevent. A blogger pulled out some of the relevant quotes from the hearing here.
Reading the points she made in court makes the DCF's actions even more ridiculous.
"Want" is such a funny term, really. If I actually wanted to live with my husband, there weren't a lot of viable alternatives.
However, that being said, there are some benefits to living here - climate and geography being chief among them. I love living surrounded by water, and the perks that come with that.
Yep. This whole thing is just awful, unreal. I think Florida has gone through the looking glass some time ago, and this is just the latest of the horrible distortions generated by a theocracy.
Honestly, it makes me more happy I moved to Canada. The United States freaks me out more and more every day, with Florida leading the way. (Native New Yorker, and yes, I still vote in the Presidential elections - I would *never* give up that right!)
Which is part of the reason I'm always a little skeptical of my Canadian friends' assertions that the Canadian right is anything near as bad as the American right.
I mean, I've lived in both places, and the differences are very, very real.
The main difference I see at this point, is that in Canada, it is still OK to have a different opinion. The government doesn't get involved where it doesn't belong.
In the US, these days, it seems the government is poking its nose everywhere, and unless you are a "moral republican" you are "against the government."
It seems Pres. Bush and his coterie want freedom of speech and separation of Church and State only if it is their speech, and a State the follows the tenets of their Church.
Cutting of what could turn into a very long rant...
Unluckily, the right here is pretty bad as well, and they are in lock-step with the NeoCons (or as much as they can get away with). Right now they are out of power, though, and, ironically, the Bush administration is doing tremendous damage to their political aspirations. Most people here hate Bush, and have a poor opinion of the American government right now (as for actual Americans, it is a mixed bag, so I try to keep a low profile).
Maybe the Canadian right was similar 15-20 years ago, but now things are completely unhinged.
