Two unrelated things in one post
Apr. 14th, 2005 03:11 pm1) I found out today that a) the other tech writer that my new company's hired is a female, and that b) she starts the same day I do. The second is good, clearly, the first is a wait and see. I've only ever worked with one female tech writer that I liked. All the other tech writers I've enjoyed working with are male. There's the immediate spectre of competition with another female writer. We'll see. I'm sure it'll work out for the best, but it gave me pause.
2) I saw a bumper sticker a few days ago that profoundly disturbed me, for what it says about what America is turning into. The sticker had an American flag in the middle of it, with a yellow ribbon bisecting it horizontally at the halfway part. Above the ribbon on either side of the flag were the words "Faith" and "Hope". Underneath the ribbon, directly below the flag, was the word "Victory".
So what happened to Charity?

Date: 2005-04-14 07:19 pm (UTC)still not a good sticker-i would've preferred charity, as most of our soldiers do a lot of that too, and they need our charity too...

Date: 2005-04-14 07:28 pm (UTC)The issue is that I can't help, looking at the broader context of the American political and cultural landscape, that the sticker is a metaphore for the current direction of the country.
Cut out social programs (charity) to spend more money on oil and weapons (victory).
It also disturbs me greatly as a Christian to see the same people who so loudly protest that the US is a "Christian nation" be the same people who I feel are perverting Christianity and obscuring its central messages in favour of victory, jingoism and hate.

Date: 2005-04-14 08:52 pm (UTC)Between women... that weird, catty, competitive streak that flares between some people straight out of the gate.
I have seen and heard about it enough that I have accepted that it is real. But what IS it?

Date: 2005-04-15 01:30 pm (UTC)If you have a team of two equals, and one's a male and one's a female, there's no problem.
If you have a team of one designated superior and one designated subordinate (manager/employee), and both are female or male, no problem, because the pecking order is already established.
If you have a team of equals and both are women, you have to sort out who's the alpha, and that's stressful, catty and competitive.
