My friend Jascha came into Toronto on Tuesday night to see me. He and Frieda rolled in at 10:30, and at 11 we went down to Bloor St. Jasch and Freida ate at a little Lebanese place, and then we went to Futures Bakery. After getting four deserts and sharing them, we went home at 1 am. Freida went to her brother's and Jasch and I stayed up 'til 3:30 talking.
There is almost no-one else on the planet for whom I would open my door at 10:30 when that person was expected at 6. But that's Jasch.
I have known Jascha since 1991. When we met, I was 18, and he was 15. He was once my closest friend, and will always be one of the people who I hold beloved.
Before my housewarming party in September, it'd been over a year since we'd seen each other. But we have always been like that. Unlike with many other people, there's no awkwardness when we see each other after absences of months or even years.
Jascha's leaving for 6 months to go study music in India. I'll miss him, but I know that in April, he'll be back, and knocking on my door impossibly late at night. And I'll open it.
