It comes as no surprise that after Republicans consolidated their control of Congress in the November elections, they would target women's abortion rights for new restrictions. But antiabortion lawmakers did their cause a disservice by launching a sneak attack, hiding their planned retrenchments in a large, must-pass spending bill.
Buried within the $388-billion bill needed to keep government operational was a provision that releases hospitals, health maintenance organizations and insurance companies from any obligation to provide abortion-related services.
