On November 16, the county zoning people will be voting on a re-zoning petition from Walmart. They want to build a super-Wally world at Ulmerton and Starkey, and to do that, they need to have the property next to the SPCA re-zoned. Now, the SPCA at Starkey and Ulmerton is one of the biggest shelters/animal sanctuaries in the tampa bay region.

The SPCA's concerns are:

  • Traffic congestion is already a major concern in this area; currently the intersection of Ulmerton and Starkey is hazardous at best. The increased traffic from a "super store" would make this intersection dangerous and unsafe. The Department of Transportation has also expressed concern about the increased traffic at the zoning hearing on November 4th.

  • Increased traffic will make the animal sanctuary less accessible and have a negative effect on the number of homeless and abused animals that are adopted, possibly increasing the euthanasia rate.

  • Traffic will make it more difficult to dispatch the SPCA's emergency ambulances and Abuse Investigators. Currently the SPCA provides these services for over 4,000 sick, injured and abused animals annually from Bellaire road to the Skyway Bridge.

  • A 24-hour a day, 7-day a week retail operation with constant light, high traffic volume and noise is not conducive to the environment required for an Animal Sanctuary.

  • Constant noise and light will increase the stress level in shelter animals and will probably result in additional euthanasias due to the behavior and health problems related to that stress.

  • Noise and light 24 hours a day will most certainly displace the pair of nesting eagles with offspring that have made the SPCA their home for the past four years.

The SPCA has a statement and petition available at: http://www.spcaofpinellas.org/other_pages/info_top.htm

They have two versions.. please consider printing this out and signing it (because we all know that written petitions are worth way more than internet petitions). It needs to be in to them by November 12.
