The job

I signed the contract this morning, thus I now feel ok about giving up the details.

I'm starting tomorrow at the Network Operations Center for Brighthouse Networks, Tampa Bay division. (For my Canadian friends, Brighthouse is basically Rogers on steroids, but minus the negative billing, I hope.) I'll be working through a consulting company on contract, doing technical writing.

Basically, the NOC supports all the other divisions. So I'll be working on a variety of projects, depending on what the development team is cooking up. Some user docs, some design docs, some training stuff, etc.

It's a fantastic opportunity, and needless to say it's wonderful to get a tech writing job right off the bat (ok, it's been a month since I started looking, but it is my first job in the US). It's in Brandon, so I'll be commuting for a bit. Then we'll likely move to Tampa, sometime in the new year.

I got a call last week from one of the recruiters at the consulting company. We met informally, and then he passed me on to his boss. The boss (who owns the Brighthouse account and who will henceforth be known as B.) set up an interview for last Thursday morning at 10. The arrangement was that I was to meet B. at 9:45 in the lobby. I got there at 9:40. B. wasn't there, but T. (the manager) noticed me, and decided that we'd start without B. B. Did get there a couple minutes later, and waited till the interview was over.

At the conclusion, T. told me he had a couple other people to interview, but that he'd like me to have a phone conversation with ML, the team lead, probably on Friday. I agreed, told B. I'd call him after 3, and went to Toys'R'Us to start looking for Christmas presents.

As I was looking at a Spider-Man "laptop", my phone rang. B. wanted to know if I was available that afternoon to talk to ML. I said I'd be available after 2:30. I finished up at the store, had lunch with Ross, and went home.

ML called at 2:35. By 3, I had a verbal job offer. Needless to say, I'm really very happy.

A big thank-you to everyone who sent me positive thoughts on Thursday.

Now to clean up some fallen branches. Whee!

Sounds like a good time - enough variety to keep it fresh & interesting without becoming stupid.

Yay - I'm so glad for you, hon.

Welcome to the zany world of Internet politics!
As a person who was once employed in such a company with heavy interaction with tech writers, let me suggest that your most important skills will be organization, delegation, and bribery. Organize the document; get the engineers to write their chunks of it (all of which will need to be cleaned up); and bribe them when they forget.

If you need technical explanations, feel free to IM me.

congrats, and always remember that tech bribes are either coffee, something sugary with coffee, or computer parts....;)
