So yesterday, I set off early in the morning to travel to Toronto. My intentions were multiple: first, I had a breakfast/coffee meeting with a former co-worker; second, I had to pick up a copy of my marriage certificate, since Toronto is the only office in the entire province doing same day service; and third, I had a conference call at 3:30 in the office. It was approximately -15 degrees Celcius yesterday morning in Toronto.
I made it to the coffee shop with no problems. We had a delightful hour and a quarter, and she had to get back to work. So I decided to walk up to the Provincial government building at 900 Bay St. From the Metro Convention Centre on Front Street.
Next time I decide to do something like that, someone please hit me over the head and stuff me in a taxi with directions to the driver to drop me off at my destination.
So 45 minutes later, I arrive at the huge government building that houses the office of the Registrar General, go inside, and find the appropriate office. At which point I begin the Waiting. The line for the information desk was very short (when I got there) and I got the number 307. They were serving 201.
I've been spending a lot of time with Ross. Two years ago, I never would have struck up a conversation with some woman in a government office who was waiting to get her baby's birth certificate. But yesterday I did. She was from Kitchener (since Toronto is the only office in the entire province that's issuing same day documents right now, there were a lot of people who'd driven in from out of town). I'd been there for about half an hour, and a gentleman approached her, and handed her an extra number that he had, 215. He didn't want her to have to wait with the baby. It was very sweet of him. They called 215 about a minute after that, and she went up to present her paperwork. After she was done, she came over and gave me her number, before going to wait in the third line for her documents. So I jumped from 307 to 276. Very nice indeed.
I ended up being called at about one, two hours after I'd gotten there. Not bad, given that by noon, the lineup for the Information line was hella long. Met a couple other people - one who works in the same town that one of my aunts lives in, west of London, and another guy who drove down from Ottawa because he had a flight scheduled for Wednesday morning to the Caribbean, and had lost his wallet last week. And I made it to the office in plenty of time to do the conference call with Bachir.
So now I have the marriage certificate, and all I need is the proper ADIT photos, and some photocopies, and I can FedEx off the paperwork to Ross tomorrow. And then I have to stop stressing, since nothing after that point is in my control.
