Pretty much every day, I drive by the rapidly diminishing remains of Center Wellington District High School. This morning, the back wall of the small gym, emblazoned with "Home of the Falcons" was still standing, but I expect it'll be gone by tomorrow. The original building is apparently staying; the swinging doors from the old english hall into the business/history wing are still there and I can only imagine that the inside of the old building just got a lot colder.
I went there for all four and a half years it took me to get my OSSD and 7 OAC credits (some of the OAC credits were used for the OSSD). The Drama Club was the biggest part of my experience; I was dragged there (literally) the first week of grade 9 by a little dynamo named Heather who became my best friend. I met the people who introduced me to AD&D and were my permanant gaming group for close to 8 years there. I acted in several, and did crew for several plays, and produced one, the latter the year I was president of the club. I'm not in contact with anyone from high school anymore; Heather died in a house fire when we were 21, Angela & Nedine I've just lost touch with, and Kelly and the D&D crew thought I'd been in the Homewood.
I was saddest when I saw the old geography wing get knocked down; my grandfather taught there, and was head of the department, for a number of years. He helped design the room he taught in, which ended up being my homeroom in Grade 12. He started a staff/student golf tournament that's still played, and which my sister and I played with him one year. One of my earliest memories is of visiting him with my uncle -- it's mostly a flash of following my uncle up a staircase that's now rubble.
I'm glad that the old building's being kept, and I recognize the need for the new school. But it still makes me sad.
I leave you with the 2005 CWDHS Valedictorian speech, from a guy who went to both the old (squeaky blue hall!) and new schools. Euchre was a huge part of my CWDHS experience too; we used to play hands backstage during shows - it was fairly common to watch a hand be interrupted by a set change.
