Why my dentist rocks, by Adrienne
Aug. 29th, 2005 03:56 pmSo, I recently went to a new dentist; Ross' plan has really good coverage, I had an appalling cavity in one of my teeth, and it's been almost 10 years since I last went (I was living in the Union Street apartment, if I recall, because my oral surgeon was on Union just two blocks from the apartment, so it was probably in the first half of 98.)
I found my Florida dentist through MetLife's preferred dentist program directory; I chose her, among the myriad dentists within a mile of the condo, because she'd trained in Montreal at McGill. It wasn't just because she's Canadian; frankly, while I have no idea which dental schools in the States are any good, I do have a better idea when it comes to Canada. Simply put: is the University of Illinois at Chicago dentistry school any good? I've got no idea, but I know McGill's rep as a school.
So I went to her, and discovered that I'd made a great choice:
1) My first visit, I was laying there with my arms crossed, really tense. She stopped, looked at me and said "Are you cold, or are you angry with me?" "I'm *freezing*". So she got me a blanket. It was the first time in my life that a doctor had read and been responsive to my body language.
2) She loaned a model of a set of teeth, to use as a visual and physical aid in teaching J how to brush his teeth properly. She just said to bring it back next time I have an appointment. This makes me very happy, especially since he's not a patient of hers -- she was just doing it to be nice.
So yay, verily, my dentist rocks.
