Bottom, as I recall (we are talking about 17 years ago, so, memory is somewhat less than reliable).
Became a secondary infection - headed down my throat along a blood vessel. My boyfriend of the time was told to stay up with me and make sure my breathing stayed regular while I was sleeping, as there was some concern that the swelling from the infection might push hard enough (umm...isn't that cartiledge - that's some serious infection, methinks)
Good luck. I had mine removed years ago (I think it was an oral surgeon). Mine were not impacted, just had cavities the dentist (my mom's dentist that I hated) didn't want to fix.
Hey! Don't forget to make them give you your teeth back! They make fantastic Christmas gifts!
(or at least good disgusting prank gifts--I gave one of mine to my mother, all wrapped up in a pretty box--hey, I had to get her back for the time she gave me her toenail).

The infection wasn't worth the food...
