"It may seem odd," Benton County Commissioner Linda Modrell told Reuters in a telephone interview, but "we need to treat everyone in our county equally."
Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union said it would file a lawsuit Wednesday against Oregon or an unnamed state entity over the state's failure to register the more than 2,550 marriage licenses issued by Portland's Multnomah County to gay couples since March 3.
Okay, so they're only complaining about the gay ones, but...ugh.
It may be me. The county in question is in Oregon. The ACLU is threatening a lawsuit against Oregon (or unnamed state blah) for failing to register marriages.
Seems a little cutting nose to spite face to me.
*shrug*
I'm glad that there's something forcing this to further discussion. Just occasionally have had enough of the four-letter-groups who decide that they're still being victims.
i think that the ACLU action has little to do with this, other than the fact that they both stem from the gay marriage debate.
Arguably, putting it in the article is kind of messy journalism "oh, look.. i still have a word count to fill.. hey, there's this other Oregon gay marriage story.. i'll reference it, even though it's a completely different situation"
i am happy thst someone has actually taken this step. it moves the discussion forward in a reasoned manner, allowing the state and municipality to formulate a reasoned response after actually considering the caselaw on the books.
it also (and i will admit i like this better) highlights the idiocy of the ban.
Unfortunately, this also means all the people who have put down deposits and made payments on their weddings now will have to postpone them until licenses are issued and most likely will lose all their monies. It is a shame that the innocent who have been so happy and doing all this planning are now most likely not going to have their dream weddings or won't be able to afford to do it again when the ban is lifted.

And the ACLU is going to sue them for not issuing licenses.
Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

I missed that part.
2nd last paragraph
Okay, so they're only complaining about the gay ones, but...ugh.
Re: 2nd last paragraph
Could you break it down for me?

And absolutely, it should be equal. Also, if the ACLU sues them, it will bring attention to the issue from a different side.

I thought it was a very elegant solution to the problem.
It also puts all the straight people in the county in the shoes of the gays every day lives..
